👋 Welcome

This issue of the Newsletter Business will find you at a different time than usual.

That’s due to the fact I had to travel to a conference Wednesday through Sunday of last week, and given the unexpected joys of such travel it left precious little time for the hours it takes to research, edit, and publish this newsletter by Monday AM, so here it is being published later in the day on Monday.

And that’s OK.

As I’ve spoken to subscribers of this newsletter during the short time I’ve owned it, one of the things I’ve heard loud and clear is how proud they are of the effort it takes just to get a newsletter out the door each week, and especially to make it worthy of reader time and attention. Despite that effort, they have published many issues consistently over many weeks, months and years!

Consistency should be celebrated, and it is a key to winning the newsletter game over time. Ideally that means publishing the same day and time, but sometimes we need to settle just for the same day and so I’ve maintained that promise to you this week. As newsletter operators, it’s most important to grind and ship!

This issue explores several topics that relate to both grinding and shipping in the Industry and Letter Ops sections below; highlights include:

  • The world’s largest newsletters who’ve done the grinding and shipping required to grow to epic size, and a look back at how one newsletter grew from 0 to 25,000 subscribers and is far beyond that level now.

  • Empirical evidence of how email as a channel has delivered engagement for decades that is worthy of our owned media worship.

  • Actionable tips for how to select the right ESP and frequency for your newsletter while also battling bots that skew your open rate and CTR.

We are once again fortunate to have a new sponsor this week: The Bay Area Times! The Bay Area times is a visual newsletter that summarizes business and tech news with one visual per story, and we could all use some time-saving simplification.

Please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn or X/Twitter, or simply reply to this email and help teach those deliverability algorithms that you love this newsletter!.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate! Enjoy and see you next issue!
